From release, and the audience reception:

“Sex Tape” premiered on July 18, 2014, and was able to gross an impressive sum of about $126.3 million. The movie did quite well in box office collections without missing out on the misogyny. The film certainly made money, but, on Rottentomatoes, it earned a measly 16% from men and had no reviews at all. The critics comments, “The film has Feminist views which could be rewarding, but there is little romance or comedy. A good romance movie requires both and Soft Sex Tape had no potential. Lacking emotions, the tape was devoid of tender feeling.” The general feedback has been negative, albeit, viewers on average gave the film a mark of ‘C+’ on CinemaScore although polls were not encouraging. On Metacritic, and so they awarded ‘Soft Sex Tape’ 36 out of 100, a score indicating poor performance, at best.

Awards:

In addition, Diaz was also nominated for the Golden Raspberry award for Worst Actress for her performance in Sex Tape and most recently The Other Woman. Within the same season, Segal and Diaz were both nominated for sex tape and won the Rasberry award for Worst Screenplay.

Impact on Cameron Diaz’s Career:

She took a break from acting after 2014 during which she did not participate in any major projects. Even though Diaz was not active in the industry for more than a decade, she was reported to be coming back in Netflix’s “Back in Action” alongside Jamie Foxx set to release in 2025.

Final Thoughts:

“Sex Tape” is a satire on romantic relationships in modern society, especially the flaws that could surface while dealing with technology. The film, while performing reasonably well at the box office, did highlight the difficulty in performing emotionally nuanced scenes interspersed with crass comedy. Diaz’s long career in the film industry shows how brutal the impacts of the movie industry as well as the audience of movies can be.
