Summary of Film
Decision to Leave, a South Korean film offers a unique blend of love story ancillary to emotional obsession and a mystery plot. Park Chan-wook has created an epic piece that masters neo-noir love films and showcases it beautifully. Hae-jun, a very keen and warm-hearted detective is given the case of a mountain climber that has an unusual death from a fall and is now looking for the truth. As he investigates, he learns more about Seo-rae who seems to be the deceased’s wife. Seo-rae’s persona manages to put Seo-rae on the suspect’s list which further deepens the mystery and the murder itself. As he investigates further, the line that separates his moral responsibility and a simple duty keeps diverging, which makes him feel like he is getting further attached to Seo-rae and the scenario.
In the primary Act, Hae-jun was to look into his suspicions on Seo-rae’s alibi. Obtaining the required evidence for the suspicious death of the man quickly escalated from Hr Jun simply being incredulous of how Seo-Rae talks about how her husband has died to being extremely shocked by the blatant calmness paired with inexplicable intelligence along with grace that she exhibits. The extreme suffering from the hacks Seo Rae has been putting upon the detective makes supervision of Seo Rae’s routine fittingly necessary.
In the secondary act, their cognitive bond starts flourishing and Hae-jun starts feeling torn. Even with reasonable evidence and thoughts that could justify his suspicions, it is obvious that Hae-jun has some sort of sentimentality toward Seo-rae. As the case progresses and the two delve deeper into the relationships, the two begin to interact with each other at a higher level exposing blurring layers of personal vulnerability that lean towards the side of ethics and justice.
The theme of the stories converges on a single point and on one hand it is a very refreshing and on the other hand profoundly tragic denouement which leaves the audience pondering over the result pregnant with melancholy and brought forth because of choices born out of love and duty.
