Synopsis
The Talented Mr. Ripley is both a compelling and captivating psychological thriller directed by Anthony Minghella and based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith. The film follows the rise of Tom Ripley (Matt Damon) and his unwavering ambition, making his way in the world as a con artist. It begins when affluent shipbuilder Herbert Greenleaf enlists Tom’s aid in fetching his son Dickie (Jude Law) from Italy. Upon Tom’s return to Italy, he is mesmerized by the Chinese lifestyle as well as his girlfriend Marge. In the mean time, Dickie and his girlfriend also slowly become irresistably attractive to Tom, whose life is about to spiral downward into chaos and culminate in deceit and murder.
The film depicts, rather cleverly, the thin and oftentimes dangerous line that exists between admiration and obsession. The interplay between inter class rivalry, self perception, and crisis of morality which is deeply rooted within the movie gets explored in the unvieling plotlines while simultaneously opening Tom Ripley’s door to the complex webs of deception that he has woven around himself, showcasing the chaos of living a lie and its consequences.
Cast & Crew
Matt Damon as Tom Ripley: The character Ripley embodies severe psychological complexities and has a quality of being charming but, at the same time, ruthlessly devoid of emotions. The character combination of the two is so perplexing that Matt is casted from the two as the best option.
Jude Law as Dickie Greenleaf: Portrayed by Jude, with no bounds to a carefree mannerism alongside the portrayal automating the actions of Ripley with reckless abandon establishing the character of Dickie to be the show-stopper that he is, the carelessness culminates himself becoming the victim in the major premise of the movie.
Gwyneth Paltrow as Marge Sherwood: Contrasting Marge, she is more gentle but in a baffling way as she has some sullen traits as she starts uncovering Ripley’s wicked designs.
Cate Blanchett as Meredith Logue: Another twist to the plot of Ripley’s schemes is when he involves the socialite of wealth, Blanchett’s Meredith, which is equally astonishing.
Philip Seymour Hoffman as Freddie Miles: Hoffman does wonders as Dickie’s sharp & flamboyant friend. He marks the character who starts getting suspicious of Ripley which begins a chain of unfortunate events.
With the aid of John Seale’s captivating cinematography, which depicted Italy during the 1950s as both beautiful and sinister, Minghella was able to perfectly capture Italy in this era. His incredible adeptness as a director, meshed with Gabriel Yared’s mysterious scores, single handedly brings the work to life.
Analysis and Themes
Impersonation and Self-Identity:
At the film’s focal point lies an identity metamorphosis of Ripley, played by Matt Damon. For him to escape the mundane life he came from, he had the need to embody different persona’s, though this pathetic attempt meant numbing himself to reality in the process.
Social Stratification and Jealousy:
It is already clear that there is no need to elaborate on this phrase, but in case to do so, we can formulate it in the following way. Ripley attempts to mask his humble origin and in the process, feels jealously envious of the glamorous lifestyle of his idol, Dickie. This manipulation of class envy eventually forced Ripley into a multitude of reckless decisions.
Moral Obstinacy:
The added and undue pressure of secondary truancy created within the narrative conflict, combined with the above mentioned, results in the conflict of moral relativity. The viewers of the film need to grapple with the sympathy for a character that is brutally heartless.
