Citizen Animal

Summary:

The movie reflects on the fragile connection between humanity and nature’s diversity through the lens of an eco-thriller and political commentary. In a post-apocalyptic world which is a product of rampant industrialisation and an undeterred corporate dystopia, the earth is at it’s brink of ecologically collapse. Elara, a wildlife biologist, stumbles onto a conspiracy so deep it ties an entire multi-national corporation to the illegal hybridization experiments conducted on endangered species for profit purposes.

Elara (Saoirse Ronan) strikes an alliance with Kai (John Boyega), an outcasted journalist seeking redemption for his past. Elara is dead set on exposing the truth and so they team up to take down eco-terrorism and corporate espionage, placing themselves in perilous situations to unmask the truth. This film depicts the effects of corporate sociopathy and the constant overspending and lack of social responsibility from businesses. Citizen Animal, directed by the one and only John Krz, portrays a haunting yet intricate reality and makes the audience ponder their identities, and purpose.

Elara and Kai grapple with a new character named “Chimera 7,” a crossbreed that has the potential to either single-handedly save or ruin the ecosystem. As the film progresses, moral dilemmas are accentuated in ways that reflect the deeper themes of loyalty, the price of progress, and sacrifice. The film’s conclusion provides a reasonable resolution and takes the audience through an emotional roller coaster with heartbreaking elements that provide relief, yet some strings are left untied when it comes to the world of nature postmortem.
